Planting a Greener Future: How Students and Volunteers Are Growing Balboa Park’s Urban Forest 🌳🌿

For Mr. Santos, an environmental science teacher, the classroom doesn’t end at four walls—it extends into the heart of San Diego’s most treasured green space, Balboa Park.

For the past four years, Mr. Santos and his students have been rolling up their sleeves, planting trees, and creating a lasting impact. Thanks to our Tree Planting Team Leaders, Garden Stewards, and dedicated volunteers, these students aren’t just learning about the environment—they’re shaping it.

From Learning to Doing: The Power of Hands-On Stewardship

“All of the concepts and content of environmental science could be covered in a classroom, BUT lacks CONTEXT. When students actually participate in the work alongside people who have dedicated themselves to conservation, it resonates in a way that a lecture never could.” – Mr. Santos

This year alone, students from City Heights Preparatory Charter School and High Tech High have helped plant 21 new trees in Morley Field and Palm Canyon—including Jacarandas, Chinese Pistache, and Magnolia ‘Little Gem’ trees.

Each tree planted reduces carbon in the atmosphere, cools our park, shelters wildlife, and enhances the visitor experience. Even more special? Many students return to check in on “their” trees, feeling a personal connection to the park.

A Tradition Rooted in Growth

Over the last four years, nearly 400 students have participated in tree-planting events with Forever Balboa Park. Some are drawn to the teamwork and collaboration, while others feel inspired by the long-term impact of their work. Regardless of what sparks their passion, they all walk away with a deeper understanding of their role in caring for San Diego’s green spaces.

“Balboa Park is an iconic part of our community, and when students get to contribute to it, it resonates with them. They see that their actions—small or big—truly matter.”
