Pitch In For Your Park

Garden Stewards partner with the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department and Forever Balboa Park to care for 18 remarkable gardens across Balboa Park. Beyond hands-on maintenance, Stewards welcome visitors and help bring these historic landscapes to life through presence and stewardship.

This role supports the long-term preservation of the Park’s botanical legacy while creating meaningful connections between people and place.

Volunteer Requirements

Be a Garden Steward

Balboa Park’s gardens are living collections that require ongoing care, curiosity, and commitment. If you enjoy working outdoors, learning about plants, and contributing to a space that serves millions each year, we invite you to join the team.

  • Over the age of 18
  • Passionate about plants and gardens
  • Able to walk, bend, and kneel to perform basic gardening tasks
  • Garden Steward shifts are offered Wednesday through Saturday mornings for a minimum of 3 hours.
  • Minimum commitment of 2 shifts per month for one year.
  • Willing to complete up to 8 hours of garden volunteer orientation and training
  • Able to make a 1-year time commitment
  • Able to remain outdoors during a 3+ hour shift.
  • All volunteers are required to complete fingerprinting and a background check, except those participating only in Monthly Park Cleanups or one-time volunteer events.
  • Able to set up/take down a shade structure and chairs (stored in nearby building) and carry other garden tools and supplies with the help of partners
