The Casa del Prado is a community hub within Balboa Park. It houses rooms used by a variety of social groups throughout San Diego County, community events, and youth organizations. After years of service, the building needed many necessary upgrades.
Paint
The exterior walls of the courtyard were repainted with historic color for the first time in more than 40 years.
Garden Beds
Garden beds were redone in collaboration with the San Diego Floral Association for the Adopt a Plot program including geraniums as a nod to the historical plantings of the building’s past.
Lighting
Lighting was installed in the interior courtyard to create more opportunities for outdoor programming. Hall lights were added to dark hallways to increase safety.
Doors
The west-facing exterior doors have been refinished with new stain and layers of marine varnish to last the test of time. 34 interior doors were repainted to include tenant information.
The Casa del Prado revitalization project was organized by Forever Balboa Park, the City of San Diego and SD Parks and Recreation in the Fall of 2021. Major support for the Casa del Prado improvement project was provided by Joe Fisch and Joyce Axelrod. Generous support was provided by the County of San Diego, with additional support from Fern Nelson & friends, and The Thursday Club.
