How we keep the 1910 Balboa Park Carousel Turning
After more than a century of operation, the Balboa Park Carousel needs requires ongoing care and maintenance. Since Forever Balboa Park acquired the Carousel in 2017, several projects have been underway to restore the beloved attraction to its intended historic glory.
Under the leadership of Bill Brown, Carousel Manager, Carousel Restoration Volunteers work weekly on repainting many of the 52 historic menagerie animals to their original glory, matching colors and design to historic catalogs from the Herschell Spillman Carousel Company.
All of the Carousel’s lights were replaced with LED alternatives, allowing for increased efficiency and the ability to add historic lights that had been removed decades ago. Forever Balboa Park also installed a state of the art security system with cameras and remote access to video feed.
Beginning in fall of 2022 the Balboa Park Carousel will go through a more comprehensive restoration project, including structure stabilization and the installation of a fire-safety sprinkler system.
